Jetboil Flash
Jetboil Zip

What the Flash adds over the Zip
Push-button igniter: Convenient, but you should always carry a lighter anyway โ igniters can fail in wet conditions. The Zip's lack of igniter is a minor inconvenience, not a dealbreaker.
Color-change boil indicator: More useful than expected. When you're cold, tired, and multitasking at camp, not having to watch the pot is genuinely nice. The indicator sleeve changes from blue to orange when the water is ready.
Extra 0.2L volume: The Flash holds 1.0L vs the Zip's 0.8L. For solo use, 0.8L is usually enough. For two people sharing, 1.0L is noticeably more useful.
Who should buy which
Buy the Zip if: you're solo camping, you're on a tight budget, you don't mind lighting with a separate lighter, or you're replacing a lost/broken stove and need a quick solution.
Buy the Flash if: you want maximum convenience, you sometimes cook for two, or you want the color-change boil indicator. The $50 premium is real but defensible if you use your stove regularly.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Jetboil Zip worth it?
At ~$70, the Zip is the most affordable entry point into the Jetboil ecosystem. It delivers identical fuel efficiency and very similar boil times to the Flash. The main sacrifices (no igniter, no boil indicator, smaller cup) are real but liveable.
- Can I upgrade Zip accessories to Flash accessories?
Jetboil cups are generally interchangeable across the product line, so a Zip burner can power a Flash cup if needed. Check Jetboil's current compatibility chart for specifics.
Verdict
For budget-conscious solo campers: the Jetboil Zip is excellent value. For anyone who wants the full Jetboil experience or cooks for two: the Flash is worth the extra $50. Read our full Jetboil Flash review for the complete picture.
